The Denied Mother: Press Release

[Atlanta, GA.] The Denied Mother will make its Atlanta debut on Mother’s Day weekend, May 9-11 at the Alliance Theatre.

Written, directed and produced by Barry Hand of Kingdom Works Production, the Play is a satirical look at what transpires when an aging woman from storm-damaged New Orleans, Mrs. Plasy McGhee (played by Alisa Hand) is forced to stay with her wealthy son, Dr. Solomon McGhee (Darrell Kelley) and his ill-tempered wife, Iris McGhee (Antonette Reeves).

Mrs. Plasy, as she is affectionately called, spends her days in her son’s home with Iris and their submissive housekeeper, Agnes (Stacey Byrd). Mrs. Plasy is often visited by another son, a homeless, Joseph McGhee (Clinton Pasley) seeking refuge from outside. Iris is villainous to Joseph and everyone who enters the house, including Mrs. Plasy’s handicapped granddaughter, Pearl (Benita Arceneaux). Mrs. Plasy is Pearl’s legal guardian.

The performance turns to riotous laughter when Mrs. Plasy’s sister, the strange and comical, Big Aintie (Glenda Hand Barnes) arrives to stay in the home to go to her class reunion. Big Aintie cheers Mrs. Plasy with her antics, which creates a great annoyance for Iris. Iris convinces her husband she can no longer tolerate his mother and stream of visiting relatives. A home healthcare nurse, a 20 year old, Laura (LaShell Barker) is brought in to care for Mrs. Plasy and the house implodes on Iris. Secrets come to light about Iris’ ability to have the child Dr. Solomon McGhee desperately wants.

The family is then forced to reckon with its identity and where Mrs. Plasy will go ultimately.

“I know this play has serious undertones, but it is also something we boomers are dealing with. It is also very funny,” expresses Hand. “I think it is what we need to think about, so I want to expose the issue of caring for aging parents and the decisions that go with it. The Denied Mother has been produced in Florida to crowds over 2,500 per show. I believe Atlantans will love it too.”

The Denied Mother will show at the Alliance Theatre on Friday, May 9th at 7:00pm; on Saturday May 10th at 2:30 p.m. (a matinee show) and at 7:00 p.m.; and on Sunday at 4:00p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Alliance Theater and online at www.barryhand.org.
